How to Get Your Website Found by ChatGPT

The goal with AI search engines like ChatGPT is to build enough relevance and authority so AI systems can confidently identify your business, understand what you offer, and use your information when it’s relevant to the user’s query.

This is commonly referred to as AI SEO or AI visibility optimization. You may also hear terms such as Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) used when discussing AI search.

AI search optimization does not replace traditional SEO. Many of the same fundamentals still matter, including useful content, technical website health, authority, and clear business information. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses multiple factors to determine which sources are relevant and reliable, and appearing in search results is not guaranteed.

Make Your Website Easy for ChatGPT to Understand

It’s important to make your website easy for both users and search systems to understand. Clearly state your services, service area, ideal customer, and contact information.

Consistency also matters. Business names, locations, services, hours, and other important details should match across your website and other online profiles. Conflicting information can make it harder for search systems to understand which information is accurate.

If your business offers several services, consider giving important services their own dedicated pages. This provides more room to explain what you offer and answer questions potential customers may have.

Specific content can also be more useful than broad, generic articles. For example, “What Should a Wilmington Business Owner Expect from Local SEO in the First 6 Months?” provides more context than “Benefits of SEO.” The goal is not simply to make titles longer. It is to answer a clear question with information that is useful and relevant to the person searching.

Create Content Worth Referencing

ChatGPT can use information from webpages when answering questions, so your content should provide something worth referencing.

Focus on content that:

  • Clearly answers common customer questions

  • Includes specific examples or first-hand knowledge

  • Explain services in detail

  • Provides accurate, current information

  • Covers topics your customers actually care about

  • Uses descriptive headings and easy-to-follow sections

  • Links to reliable sources when supporting factual claims

Avoid publishing large amounts of repetitive content solely to target slightly different search phrases. Strong AI visibility still starts with useful content written for people.

Build Authority Beyond Your Website

Your website is only one place where information about your business can appear. Third-party mentions can help establish that your business is a real and recognized entity.

Examples include:

  • Relevant business directories

  • Industry websites

  • Local news coverage

  • Professional associations

  • Authentic customer reviews & testimonials

  • Partner or vendor websites

  • Links and mentions from other reputable websites

Keep your business information consistent wherever it appears. Your company name, website, location, services, and other key details should clearly refer to the same business.

Make Sure ChatGPT Can Access Your Website

OpenAI says any public website can potentially appear in ChatGPT Search. To make your content available for summaries, snippets, citations, and links, your website should allow OAI-SearchBot to access it.

Check that:

  • Your robots.txt file isn’t blocking OAI-SearchBot

  • Important pages are publicly accessible

  • Your CDN or firewall isn’t blocking OpenAI’s search crawler

  • Pages don’t require a login to view important information

  • Important content isn’t dependent entirely on scripts that prevent it from being accessed

OpenAI also notes that bot protection, firewalls, JavaScript challenges, and other security systems can sometimes block legitimate crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.

Maintain Strong Technical SEO

Traditional technical SEO still supports AI search visibility by making your website easier to access, navigate, and understand.

Review:

  • Website speed: Check page performance and Core Web Vitals.
  • Mobile responsiveness: Make sure pages work properly across screen sizes.
  • Clear navigation: Important pages should be easy to find.
  • Structured data: Use appropriate schema markup to clarify information when applicable.
  • Internal linking: Connect related services, blogs, and important pages.
  • Crawlability: Make sure important pages can be reached and indexed.
  • Google Business Profile: Keep your business information accurate and current.

Technical SEO does not guarantee that ChatGPT will cite your website, but it helps remove barriers that could make your content harder to discover or understand.

Keep Important Information Clear and Current

Important business information should appear as readable webpage text, not only inside images, videos, PDFs, or graphics. This includes service details, locations, hours, pricing when applicable, FAQs, and contact information.

Review this content regularly to make sure details are still accurate, links work, and older information has not become outdated. Clear, current content gives both users and search systems a better understanding of your business.

Build a Website AI Search Can Understand

Getting your website found by ChatGPT starts with many of the same principles that support traditional SEO: useful content, strong technical foundations, clear business information, and an established online presence.

The added step is making sure AI search tools can actually access and understand that information. GM Web Services can help you improve your website structure, content, technical SEO, and overall search visibility as AI-powered search continues to grow.
